Scope of Work
It isn’t every day that we are approached by a project of this scale and complexity. When we
were asked to collaborate on creating this truly jaw-dropping installation designed by HWKN for
the annual Young Architects Program at the world-renowned MoMA PS1, we knew we were in
for a wild time.
Water cannons and a misting station were incorporated into the structure, creating a cool and
inviting experience. The modern, geometrically imperfect lines produced by the construction
scaffolding created six unique spikes, each with its own shape and size. A vinyl mesh was
selected to skin each spike, choose for wind transmission, water repellency and heat resistance.
Creating these panels required precision fabrication supported by meticulous pre- and post-
fabrication planning, which is critical to ensure the fit and smooth installation.
The result? A sophisticated interactive art installation that changed the skyline for blocks.
Fun Facts!
-
- Spikes ranged from 7’ to over 24’ in length.
- The Vinyl Panels secured to the scaffolding with grommets and ties.
